A
yoga pose morphs into a pomegranate … a dancer spins into a banana …
and a wrestler’s nourished by a strawberry … Just a sampling of the
vivid imagery painted by Lowell teen artists to grace a 140-foot long
fence in downtown Lowell.
The
opening celebration for the mural will be held on Friday, June 26, 2009
at 3pm at the 200 Merrimack Street mural site. Teen artists from The
Revolving Museum’s Vanguardian Art program will be present to share
their explorations into learning about health lifestyles. All are welcome!
On
an 8x2 foot panel each teen explored the “morphing” of a nutritional
element into a youthful achiever in between five to seven steps. A
total of 17 panels will be mounted end to end stretching 100 feet.
Other panels include a cherry that transforms into a boy’s face, a
surfer who rides the wave into a jug of fresh drinking water and a cup
of ramen noodles that converts into a college graduate.
This
is the sixth year the murals have been installed on the block–each for
a six-month appearance. The previous mural’s theme was We Are One: Love Our Mother Earth.
“We think it’s important to pursue socially important themes. Youth can
play a big part in influencing their community,” Coluntino says. Art allows us to send a message in a fun, fresh way while beautifying our neighborhoods.”
The mural artists include: Caroline
Allen, Liz Bacheller, Christopher Baker, Kelsey Barowich, Thais Campos,
Tatiana Charlott, Rebekah Hallbrook, Tyler Junker, Malisa Kuch, Shauna
McCord, Nilya Mitchell, Michael Sam, T Stover, Mattt Swift, Atena Villorio, Vicheath Kyle Yonhorn and Karoline Zilli. Their Instructors include Caroline Allen and Diana Coluntino.
The You Are What You Eat Mural
was funded in part by the City of Lowell Community Development Block
Grant, Sovereign Bank and TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation.
