The Revolving Museum: Making Space for Art and Community
Our office, Artbotics & computer lab, Fashion Lab, and public arts production workshops are in Western Avenue Studios. Our 'gallery space' is throughout the City of Lowell. At present we have installations in Harmony Park, the Merrimack Mural. Recently, poems on scrools were installed around the downtown in support of Poetry Fest. The current out door project is relaunch of the Big Head, near the entrance of the Western Avenue Studios, working with local graffiti artists.
We are now 'Making Space for Art and Community' online Our first project is the launch of Revolving Blog for a Lowell author. The first posting invites community dialogue about what it means to be 'A Museum without Walls'.
The Revolving Museum revitalizes urban space by engaging the public via art. From its beginning in 1984 as a public art installation in five abandoned railroad cars on the Boston waterfront, to breathing life into an empty building in Fort Point Channel, to assisting the transition of Lowell's Arts Overlay District, and transforming Lowell's public parks, the Revolving Museum helps renew public engagement of urban space. Now in Western Avenue Studios, a site for over 200 professional artists, the Revolving Museum enhances the daily pulse of the building through the launch of facilities to engage aspiring artists and youth. This includes a Fashion Lab, a Carpentry Shop, Painting Studio, and a Multimedia Computer Lab. These facilities support community arts programs and collaborative educational art programs for underserved youth. The workshops also serve in the production of public artworks and installations throughout the city.
