Revelation for Revolution
Exhibition - January 26 - May 2, 2000
Opening Reception
- Saturday, February 12, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.The Revolving Museum is proud to present its millennial spectacular Revelation for Revolution, a nationally juried exhibition from January 26th through May 2nd. This dynamic exhibition features 54 self-taught and trained artists working in all mediums.
Rebecca Hoffberger, founder and director of the internationally acclaimed American Visionary Art Museum (Baltimore), is the guest curator of the show. Hoffberger established herself on the public art scene by directing a $7.5 million fundraising campaign, enabling her to open the AVAM which specializes in showing the artworks of visionaries, outsiders, self-taught and folk artists. We are pleased to announce that Hoffberger will be present for the February 12th opening reception.
Hoffberger's selections were guided by her belief that all real change is first born out of individualized shifts in perception. 100 out of 300 submissions from across the country were ultimately chosen for their capacity to express or provoke revelatory experience. Revelation for Revolution reveals the heightened hopes and fears that artists have about the new millennium.
This powerful exhibition presents a kinetic world where sculpture and film collide within a maze of images. A walk through the gallery provides an a-la-carte menu of art . . . How about an originative pushcart selling wishbones and skipping rocks, or imprudent sexual toys made entirely of moss and other organic materials. Lay your mind down in a bed of chicken bones and feathers . . . Be amazed by wacky machines constructed from gasoline cans, kettles and computer chips or play a piano made of wooden keys in the shape of fingers. These works and more will bring to life the diversity of responses that artists are having to this significant point in time.
The Revolving Museum's mission is to establish public art projects, educational programs, exhibitions and special events that encourage collaboration and dialogue with artists, youth and community members; to increase public understanding of the importance of the arts and arts education; to advance cultural awareness. The Revolving Museum is funded in part by The Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Boston Cultural Council and members of The Revolving Museum.
