Teen Arts Group (TAG)

The TAG program is a mentor-oriented program that provides guided opportunities for youth to develop their own public art projects, from start to finish. Participants work with the Museum staff on everything from concept origination and development, designing works that bring the concepts into being plus sactual construction of the work. But the program also involves youth in bearing responsibility for publicity and other marketing tasks that are needed in order for final installation of the public artwork out in the community.

Activities are scheduled by school semester and by summer months. The school semesters mirror Lowell High School’s schedule, with two semesters per year, September to December and January to June. The summer program runs from July through August. TAG meets bi-weekly during the school year and four times weekly during the summer -- on-site and/or in the Museum’s LAB space. The meeting schedule will be expanded if possible.

The request for such a program came from teenagers who were regular participants at the Museum. The Museum staff had long wanted to bring a self-contained program of sustained public art projects into being for some time, but only in early 2004 was sufficient space available to devote to the program. The Museum’s LAB provides space for workshops, art exhibitions, meetings and for the hands-on management of program.

The goals for the TAG program are that this it be a catalyst for:

Educational growth, particularly in the area of the arts

Personal growth toward the development of both individual competence and social engagement

Development of a creative capacity that the arts are known to stimulate and that will be invaluable in all facets of the participants’ lives

Cross-cultural dialogue, respect for diversity and cooperation on projects serving the larger good.
